F1 tyre strategy: stints, pit stops and compounds, race by race

Built from the official timing data of every race PITWALL has processed

A race is decided as much by when the cars stop and what they put on as by raw pace. PITWALL draws every driver's stints and compounds on one chart, lists each pit stop, and shows where a stop would drop a driver in the order. Below is what the data of each processed race says: the most common strategy, how many stops the finishers made, and how long each compound lasted.

Questions

How are these numbers calculated?

From PITWALL's data of each race: the stints of a driver are cut at his official pit stops, and the strategy is the compound he raced on in each stint. The number of stops is the number of official pit stops. Only drivers who completed at least 90% of the race distance are counted, so retirements do not distort the picture. Compound lengths are the average laps of those stints, the last one included. A race with no official pit stop data is left out.

Can I watch the strategy unfold lap by lap?

Yes. Open any race in the replay and the tyre strategy window grows as the race runs; drag the timeline to any lap. The list of replayable races is on the race replay page.

Is PITWALL official?

No. PITWALL is an unofficial project and is not associated with the Formula 1 companies.
